Around 1,500 ambulance accidents every year result in injuries in the U.S., according to data gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A little over half of these injuries are to people outside the ambulance (drivers and passengers in other cars, pedestrians, cyclists, etc). Injuries to those inside the ambulance are often due to emergency personnel or patients not being properly buckled in, or not being buckled at all, or emergency equipment not being secured. There are about 30 fatal ambulance crashes per year as well. Most often, a driver or passenger of another vehicle is killed.
